Riebeek-Kasteel is one of the oldest towns in South Africa. During 1661 Jan van Riebeeck initiated an inland discovery expedition. They set off in the direction of Paardeberg and on 3 February 1661 they ascended a lonely mountain and came upon the fertile vista of the Riebeek Valley.
Farmers established themselves in the valley and during 1900 the town was laid out in and around its existing church and its neighbor The Royal Hotel, the oldest hotel of South Africa.
The Riebeek Valley is well-known for the annual Olive festival in early May and it’s world-class Swartland Wines.
Solo Studios has become an annual event and features the many top artists who live in the Valley who open their studios to the public. It is well on its way to becoming one of the premier art events in South Africa.
