Modder River is an irrigation and stock farming town situated south of Kimberley near the confluence of the Riet and Modder rivers.
The Second Boer War Battle of Modder River took place here. Modder River is part of the N12 Battlefield Route with two blockhouses, information panels, and memorials. The original Crown and Royal Hotel was the British HQ during the Anglo-Boer War.
