For the leisure traveller, Volksrust is perfect for a sleepover on your route from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng, the Kruger National Park or Free State.
Volksrust means “Nation’s Rest” in Dutch, named so because it is where the Transvaal soldiers rested after the Battle of Majuba, wherein the Transvaal won its independence back from the British.
During the Second Boer War the British built a concentration camp in the town and many Boer women and children died here.
The town has important beef, dairy, maize, sorghum, wool and sunflower seed industries.
