Standerton is situated on the banks of the Vaal river, only 10km downstream of the Grootdraai Dam. The dam is one of its major attractions, bringing visitors wishing to see the dam and enjoy the activities.
The town was established in 1876 and was named after Boer leader Commandant AH Stander who was buried in the town after his death in 1896.
The area around the town promotes mixed agriculture with crops such as maize, sunflower seeds, groundnuts, and potatoes. Poultry and dairy farming is also conducted in the region.
Standerton has a variety of sports facilities to keep sports lovers occupied, There are many clubs available to join or even just visit when you are on holiday. These include the 9-hole Standerton Golf Club and there is also a Bass-Fishing Club to keep the anglers happy, a boat club and a Model Aeroplane Club for model plane enthusiasts.
