The Cosmos Country region borders the Free State and Gauteng. The region covers a wide area of flat open high-altitude grassland interspersed with low rolling hills.
Cosmos Country is a flower lover’s paradise as well as the perfect destination for the watersports fanatic and enthusiastic golfer. In the midst of its natural beauty this region has a profusion of game reserves and excellent fishing spots. The area is also steeped in South African history and culture.
This is one of the country’s most productive areas. Maize, beef, mutton, sunflower seed, sorghum, groundnuts, potatoes, grain and vegetables are the main products.
In the late summer and autumn, fields are covered with masses of pink and white Cosmos. This attractive wildflower is officially considered a weed in South Africa but planted in many gardens none-the-less.
Amongst all the beauty, the region is the centre of crude oil production in Southern Africa. It is the only place in the world where petrol is made out of coal for use on a commercial basis. The region is also home to the biggest underground coal mining complex on earth, supplying raw materials to Sasol.
Known as the ‘energy belt’ of Mpumalanga, the Cosmos Country region houses a number of power stations that supply energy to most Southern African countries.
The area offers activities like game viewing, fantastic water-sports, boating, water-skiing, kite-surfing and wind-surfing.
The Vaal River is also an ideal freshwater fishing destination. If you are a bird and wildlife enthusiast then head for the 128ha Standerskop nature reserve.
