Pongola is a small town on the left bank of the Phongolo River. It is situated in a fertile valley on the N2, near the Lubombo Mountains, with easy access to the Swaziland border posts.
It is a unique and tranquil subtropical environment. The town has 50 km² of sugarcane and subtropical fruit plantations surrounding it.
Pongolapoort Dam and Pongola Game Reserve are situated east of town. It is the only dam in South Africa where you can catch African tigerfish.
Pongola is surrounded by hunting and safari lodges, several have the Big Five. Some farms specialize in biltong hunting and others concentrate on trophy hunting.
