Bronkhorstspruit is a small farming town 50km east of Pretoria along the N4 highway towards Witbank.
Cultura Park, a suburb of Bronkhorstspruit, hosts the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere. The South African headquarters of the Humanistic Buddhist order does a lot of community work. They also celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is open to the public, who can book in for a weekend-long retreat.
Amongst favourites is the RietVlei Nature Reserve, Nan Hua Temple and the Bronkhorstspruit Dam.
The Bronkhorstspruit Dam, or “Bronkies” as it is known to the locals, is named after its neighbouring town, and both lie less than 100km from Johannesburg. The dam is popular particularly for those who want bird watching and fishing to be part of their getaways in Gauteng.
You can take out a boat or even take your turn on jet-skis. There are also swimming pools and restaurants to keep you busy.
The reserve is situated on the southern edge of the dam and is a wonderful area.
